JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Professional Journalists Association (AWPI) paid a visit to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Jakarta on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in a gesture of solidarity following a deadly attack that claimed the lives of several Iranian citizens.

According to the AWPI, the incident was linked to a military operation allegedly conducted by Israeli forces.

Led by Peter Yang, Head of AWPI's Foreign Relations Division, the delegation included Deputy General Treasurer Suzi Oktalina and Head of Public Relations D.M. Pertiwi.

The group met directly with Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Baroujerdi, at the embassy located in Central Jakarta’s Menteng district.

“This visit is a show of support. We conveyed our condolences to the victims’ families and signed a petition in solidarity,” Yang said in a statement.

The AWPI described the visit as an expression of empathy over what it termed a humanitarian tragedy affecting Iranian civilians. Ambassador Baroujerdi, according to Yang, expressed appreciation for the continued support shown by the Indonesian government, various Islamic organizations, and individual sympathizers.

Call for UN Action
D.M. Pertiwi, Head of Public Relations at AWPI, emphasized that the visit also carried a strong message of protest against Israel’s military actions.

“Through the Iranian Embassy, we are calling on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate and concrete steps to halt the aggression and ensure justice for the victims,” said Pertiwi.

She added that the gesture also represents a broader interfaith and international solidarity, particularly among Muslim communities, in standing against civilian casualties.

“This is not just an act of sympathy, but a moral commitment to the universal values of humanity,” she concluded.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where recent escalations have drawn criticism from various civil society groups and governments around the world. [■]
